Bilge pump runs but no water is pumped out
Janne
Problem
The bilge pump motor runs and you can hear it spinning, but little or no water is discharged overboard. Water remains in the bilge even though the pump appears to be operating normally. This is common on cruising sailboats and is usually caused by a blockage in the intake, pump impeller, or discharge hose.
Fix
- 1
Turn off the power to the bilge pump at the electrical panel or battery switch to prevent accidental activation while working.
- 2
Check the pump intake and strainer for debris such as sand, dirt, fibers, or small objects. Remove the pump from its base if necessary and clean the intake thoroughly.
- 3
Inspect the pump impeller. Turn the pump over and check if fishing line, hair, or debris is wrapped around the impeller shaft. Remove any obstruction carefully.
- 4
Inspect the discharge hose connected to the pump. Look for kinks, crushed sections, or blockages that may restrict water flow.
- 5
Disconnect the hose and flush it with water if necessary.
- 6
Check the outlet through-hull fitting on the hull exterior. Make sure it is not blocked by dirt, marine growth, or debris.
- 7
Reconnect everything and test the pump by pouring water into the bilge. The pump should now discharge water strongly through the outlet.
- 8
If the pump still runs but does not move water, the pump cartridge or impeller may need replacement.
