Outboard wouldn’t run properly — water in the fuel (fixed by replacing carburetor)
Janne
Problem
My 6hp dinghy outboard started running very rough and kept stalling shortly after starting. It would sometimes start but then lose power or die when I tried to throttle up. Turned out that we forgot to close the air intake over night, and were hit by strong rains overnight.
Fix
- 1
After draining the Fuel form the Tank I saw that there was clearly water in the fuel. The water was more or less cleanly separated from the gasoline, just a small amount and it was underneath the gasoline.

luckily I had a spare carburetor on board... After removing the old one and putting in the spare carburetor the engine ran again. However it wasn't as smooth as before also after driving a bit.

I cleaned and dried the old carburetor and swapped them back. Funny enough the engine still doesn't run as smooth as before. Works just fine though!
